If the requirement is that your customer data lives on machines you control, these are the two most credible answers in this directory. Both publish their source, both document self-hosting, and both sell a hosted version for people who would rather not run a server. Almost everything else about them differs, including how old they are.
Two philosophies of what a tier is for
EspoCRM has decided that tiers are about scale and nothing else. All three hosted plans advertise the full feature set and every extension. Basic is US$15 per user per month with a hundred thousand records; Enterprise is US$25 with ten million; Ultimate is US$69 with no limit. Paying more buys headroom, never capability, and that makes the arithmetic unusually honest.
Twenty splits differently. Its Pro tier at US$9 per user carries full customisation, custom apps and workflow automation — the things most of this category treats as upgrade material. The Organization tier at US$19 adds governance instead: row-level permissions, SAML and OIDC single sign-on, a custom domain. Above both sits an enterprise arrangement starting at fifty thousand dollars that is negotiated rather than published.
The seat minimums nobody advertises
This is where the two separate sharply for small buyers. EspoCRM's cheapest hosted tier requires a minimum of three users, Enterprise five, and Ultimate ten. A person working alone who wants EspoCRM's cloud is buying three seats, and the effective entry price is US$45 a month rather than US$15.
Twenty has no such minimum. One user on Pro is US$9, and that is the whole bill. For a solo consultant or a two-person agency, that difference is larger than any feature comparison between them.
Self-hosting removes the constraint on both sides, and replaces it with the same operational cost: a database to run, updates to apply, backups to own. Twenty documents a Docker Compose path; EspoCRM has a decade of installation documentation behind it.
Which should you choose?
Choose EspoCRM if you want everything and you want it now, if your team is at least three people, or if maturity matters more to you than modernity. Getting the complete feature set on the cheapest plan is a genuinely good deal, and the record ceilings go as high as anyone needs.
Choose Twenty if you are one or two people, if you want to extend the CRM in code rather than configure it, or if a modern developer experience is part of what you are buying. It is younger, its integration catalogue is thinner, and it is the better fit for a technical team that wants to build on top.
