Comparison

Attio vs folk

Two modern CRMs for people who found the incumbents heavy. Compared on free tiers, what the data model lets you build, and who each suits.

These two get shortlisted together often, and they are less alike than they look. Both are recent, both are designed against the bloat of the incumbents, and both are bought by small teams who want something that does not feel like enterprise software. Underneath, one is a flexible database and the other is a relationship tool.

Whether you model it, or it models you

Attio hands you the data model. Objects you define, attributes you choose, relationships you draw, and automation that runs across whatever you built. If what you sell does not fit a standard deal record, that flexibility is the reason to be here, and it is available on the paid tiers rather than at enterprise level.

folk starts from the person. Records are people and the companies they belong to, enriched automatically and threaded through email, calendar and WhatsApp. Custom objects and deals exist, but on the second tier, and they are an addition to the model rather than the point of it.

The practical test: if you can describe your sales process as a pipeline of people you follow up with, folk is aimed at you. If you cannot, Attio is.

The cost of getting started

Attio publishes a free plan with no expiry. folk does not — the cheapest ongoing option is Standard at US$24 a member, or US$30 billed monthly. That is the widest gap between these two, and for a solo consultant it may be the whole decision.

Above the floor they converge. Attio's Plus is US$35 a user and Pro US$79. folk's Premium is US$48, and that is where API access, custom objects, workspace roles and dashboards arrive. Both reserve their top tier for a conversation.

What folk includes at its entry tier is broader messaging coverage than Attio documents: mail, calendar and WhatsApp in one timeline, with enrichment and a browser extension.

Which should you choose?

Choose Attio if the shape of your business is unusual, if you have somebody willing to design the model, or if a free tier that never expires is how you would rather start. It is the more configurable product and the cheaper way in.

Choose folk if the work is relationship-led — agency development, investing, recruiting — and you want the history assembled for you rather than designed by you. You will pay from the first month, and the messaging coverage is what you are paying for.
